Narrative

Adult Family Care (AFC) is a Medicaid funded program. The Arc of Opportunity's AFC program provides pay and clinical help to qualifying family members or caregivers. We help them in caring for their loved ones at home. AFC offers families the chance to delay or even prevent the need for institutional care.

The Arc of Opportunity's AFC Program helps the mission of The Arc.  We work with families of all people who, for whatever reason, cannot safely live alone.  We include, but do not limit our outreach to, people with developmental disabilities (DD).

Working with AFC Qualified Caregiver, the AFC Team provides:

  • Nursing support and oversight
  • Case management and support
  • Help with accessing community services
  • Training and networking
  • Financial pay

The Arc of Opportunity's AFC program supports all people who, because of medical, physical, cognitive or mental health problems cannot safely live alone.  “The Arc's AFC Program offers families the chance to delay or even prevent the need for institutional care” explains Kathleen Kopitsky, Division Director.

Examples of families currently enrolled include:

  • A middle aged man with Downs Syndrome
  • A middle aged woman with complications due to obesity and diabetes
  • A young man on the Autism spectrum
  • An elderly woman with dementia

“The Adult Foster Care Program at The Arc of Opportunity is a Medicaid funded program.  That means members must have Mass Health and must be able to get a doctor’s referral” explained Kathleen Kopitsky, Division Director. “This could be a fine opportunity for families who are struggling with medical issues like dementia or brain injury recovery to get a level of support for caring for their family members.  We are located in Central Massachusetts. We are local so that our nurses and case managers are your neighbors and know the local communities well."
