Narrative

UCP staff works together with the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) to make sure that people are placed in the residential setting that best meets their needs. We support the development of independent living skills. We encourage full participation in the community.

The Options for Community Living Program is a community-based supported living model of services. It is set up to meet the needs of people with developmental/physical disabilities. People receive supports while living in accessible apartments in eastern Massachusetts communities. The service model looks like an independent living program. More supports address skill areas which a person cannot presently manage independently.

Help provided is designed to aid each person to reach maximum functional skill levels in areas such as:

  • personal care attendant (PCA) management
  • transportation (rides)
  • finances  (money and benefits management)
  • health management
  • household management
  • community access
  • self-advocacy
  • self-care
  • social/recreation

To prevent case management from becoming a form of dependency, staff intervention is limited to the lowest degree of help needed to let a person to pursue independent living goals. The case manager’s tasks are purposely geared toward helping a person to implement his/her initiatives. We are offering technical assistance to supplement skills affected by an person's disability-related impairments.
